Ten Life Lessons You Will Learn While Traveling
One of the best things about
- How to keep yourself safe.
On my podcast, Terrance Talks Travel: Über Adventures, I have a whole episode dedicated to staying safe, healthy and happy on any adventure. When you start off travelling, you might find yourself appearing like a bit of a naive tourist, and unfortunately, this is what a lot of people such as pickpockets and scam artists are looking for!
The more you travel, the more you will learn the important tips and tricks that will help keep you safe and let you enjoy your adventures without worrying.
- How to make friends anywhere.
Travel is a social enterprise. Even the biggest introvert can’t help but meet people and get to know them fairly quickly when traveling. Some become fun travel buddies. Some are transient friends and some become lifelong friends. I treasure every encounter and so should you.
- How to challenge your perceptions.
People who stay in one place all their lives will never experience other cultures and, therefore, never see life in a different way. Traveling lets you really immerse yourself in a different culture, and by doing this, you are able to challenge your beliefs and test your limitations which will make you a better person in the long run. You may also find yourself returning home with more confidence and more skills, which can be better for your mental health and well-being.
- How to get out of your comfort zone.
Travel forces us to create a new and exciting routine, to try new food and experiences, and to push our limits. When we expand our horizons, we grow. We need to grow and evolve or life gets boring when we’re standing still.
- Things will go wrong, but you will discover that you are stronger and more adaptable than you think.
Whether you miss a flight or your hotel is filthy, things will always go wrong, in traveling, as in life. When you are away from home things can seem a little harder, but they are also a lot more rewarding when you get through them. Learning to problem solve on your own or make the most out of a bad situation is a skill that will serve you well, both while you are traveling but also when you get back home to the real world, too.
- You learn so much.
You learn about everything, including other cultures, geography, world history, politics, religion, how to read a map, how to sleep anywhere (!), how to live out of a suitcase (and happily get by with fewer clothes, money and posessions), and even some foreign language. Learning is always a good thing.
- You discover that the best plans are no plans at all.
Well, this might not be entirely true. The best plans are flexible enough to allow you to stumble across a new adventure. Plans that give you time to really enjoy what you’re doing in the moment, without rushing off to check off the next thing, are truly the best plans. Often times, the best experiences of a trip are the ones I didn’t originally anticipate. I discovered them by accident or through a local or fellow traveler.
- You gain confidence and become a better person.
With every new experience you conquer, you gain confidence and become a stronger, better person. Travel opens up the world for us and by embracing each new adventure, we learn we can do things we didn’t know we could do and this makes us happy and confident.
- You realize that people are different but also the same.
When you visit new places you will notice the difference between yourself and the locals but, hopefully, you will also learn to see how we are all quite similar, as well. After all, people around the world basically want the same things; love, success, happiness, and contentment.
- You become relaxed and recharged.
Somewhere along the way you forget to stress over every little thing like we tend to do at home and you become content with simple pleasures. At the very least, you no longer sweat the smalls stuff. Less stress and more happiness is always a good thing. Plus, we become rejuvenated and recharged. This is good for our physical and mental well-being.
Why I travel and why I think you should travel…
First and foremost, any type of travel is some type of adventure. Also, when you are traveling, you are always learning (even when you don’t realize it). And learning is a good thing! No matter how many countries you visit or how many air miles you log, you will never stop learning new things. You are always experiencing new cultures, cuisines, places, and pushing yourself a bit farther. You are always discovering more about yourself and the world. This is what makes travel so great.
