Survival Skills: Things An Adventure Traveler Should Know

For adventure travelers, learning some survival skills is a good idea. Given the remote destinations and unique experiences, you could easily get lost or stranded. You never know when you might need to make a fire or build some kind of shelter or have to forage for food. Seriously! I was once stranded on an uninhabited island on the North Carolina coast while researching a story on the wild horses of Shackleford Banks (long story). My grandfather was once dropped off in the remote wilds of Alaska. He was a young man who craved adventure and wanted a challenging experience. He had his appendix removed beforehand since he had no access to medical treatment or evacuation strategy! He (and his new bride) had some food, water, and gear but had to find food and make a fire.  A friend of mine lost all his rations once while on a camping trip. While the group was hiking, a bear (s) raided their camp and ate most of their food! They had to forage for food for the rest of the weekend since no one wanted to pack up and go home. But they did keep a vigil for bears!

This is information that is handy for camping, hikers, boy scouts, and many others.

After researching this information for a chapter in her historical fiction novel, my friend, Sara Whitford, created this incredibly helpful Survival Skills post:
