This week’s blog is all about space travel. This is the future of the travel industry! And it’s happening sooner than you may imagine. A California company, Orion Span, is promising trips as soon as 2021. So here’s the deal:
WHAT: a 12-day trip to Aurora Station, which will be the world’s first luxury space hotel with private suites designed for two people. (I’m not sure how many people can be accommodated on board the space craft or at the space station, but I’m sure it is a small number).
WHERE: 200 miles above earth; zero gravity
WHEN: 2021
HOW MUCH: $9.5 million ($80,000 deposit). Sadly, you read that right. It will cost nearly $10 million to go into space, at least in the beginning. Hopefully, they’ll come up with an economy seating area in their space capsule!
Fun Facts: Guests will have internet access so they can connect with earth friends! Eventually, there will be space condos for sale. Owners will be able to live, visit, and lease their space condos. There will be two crew members on every space flight. Participants will have to complete a three-month Astronaut Certification before embarking on their space journey. The first part of this training is online, the second phase will be at their training facility in Houston, and the final phase will be on board the space craft.

Fun Facts About Space Travel…
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon and return home safely – a journey of 250,000 miles.
Since 2000, permanent crews have been living and working in space at the International Space Station.
In 2001, the first private citizen, millionaire Dennis Tito, toured space. He paid $20 million to spend a week in space.
While it’s not quite the same, participants do go into space and it is much more affordable…Virgin Galactic plans to take space tourists into sub-orbital space in the near future at a cost of $200,000 per person. The six person craft will make a 3.5 hour journey during which the passengers will encounter a short period of weightlessness. No dates have been specified yet.
Asteroid mining may be bigger than space vacations. In fact, asteroid mining is expected to be highly profitable. The giant rocks contain minerals in quantities that we can only imagine here on Earth. Companies are already working on how to capitalize from asteroid mining. An asteroid can tell us a great deal about other planets and reveal how to live and work in space.
Living in space could happen sooner than we think. NASA’s goal is to have a landing on a near-Earth asteroid by 2025, and Mars soon after that. Technology is being developed to create viable habitats for Mars colonists, which will most likely be explorers, researchers, physicians, and scientists in the beginning. As this colony grows, more services (more people) will be needed. Can you imagine that you could get a job offer that would mean moving to Mars rather than to Michigan!
One of the most fascinating programs today is the Kepler mission, whose purpose is to find and identify planets that possibly resemble Earth. To date, it’s discovered over 2,000 possible planets, 132 confirmed planets, and four planets that lie within the “habitable zone” of a star.
