Terrance, the National Zoo in Washington, DC is free but they charge for parking, $16 for Ist three hours and $22 for longer. Kind of steep since I paid $5 sbout 20 yrs ago. Most parking places are filled by 10:30am. This is off their own website. There may be additional parking in area but not sure.

Even though you posted this under “Western Adventure” your comment is in reference to my post about “Twelve Free Things to Do in Washington, DC.” I mention this so others can follow our discussion. While it is true that parking is challenging in DC (as it is in every big city and tourist destination in America–try finding parking in Charleston any time of year). Hey, you even pay an additional fee for parking in most major cities on top of your hotel room charge! But back to zoo parking. There is a flat fee of $22 for day parking at the zoo, but street parking on side streets around the zoo is free. You have to get there early or late or get lucky to get steet parking. Also, there is a discount for zoo members and it is free for FONZ members. Furthermore, visitors can reserve parking in advance through Parking Panda. At least admission to the zoo is free! The average zoo admission cost in America is $20pp for adults, so this is still a good deal.
