Why I Like It: There are a lot of challenges to planning and implementing a Machu Picchu adventure. The Peruvian government has imposed numerous restrictions on tourists, which makes a tour package the best way to go. In this case, Smartours handles everything, including official guides, entrance tickets, transfers, and transportation. This package includes international, round-trip airfare (overnight flight) from Miami to Cuzco, Peru. It also includes two nights in Yucay, three nights in Cusco, two nights in Puno, and one night in Lima. It also includes airfare taxes, fees, baggage, and surcharges, as well as intra-Peru flights, ground transportation, and all transfers. Additionally, accommodations are in first class hotels and eleven meals are included, along with an English-speaking guide and all sightseeing fees. Different departure cities can be done for an additional fee. This is a savings of more than $800 a couple!

Tucked away in a cloudforest northwest of Cusco (Peru), Machu Picchu is believed to have been a royal estate or sacred religious site for Inca leaders, whose civilization was nearly destroyed by Spanish invaders in the 16th century. For hundreds of years, the abandoned citadel’s existence was a secret known only to peasants living in the region. The five-mile historic site, discovered in 1911, is now visited by more than 500,000 tourists a year. The remains of this ancient civilization are one of the world’s most famous manmade wonders and a “must” for any adventure traveler.
