Machu Picchu Adventure

Where in the world: 7-day Machu Picchu Adventure (Peru)
Book by: Until Sold Out
Departure Dates: Year-round departure dates
Cost: $1,149pp
Why I Like It: First of all, Machu Picchu is Peru’s most popular destination–and it is a must for adventure travelers! Also, this is not a tour per se, but more of an immersive travel experience. Highlights include a train ride from Cusco to the Sacred Valley, exploring historic ruins, hiking the Inca Trail (!) and visiting the Inca Bridge, and a privately guided tour of the world famous Machu Picchu. Participants will have a chance to interact with locals when visiting a local pottery (including a pottery-making demonstration), women’s weaving co-op, and local markets. Learn about traditional ways of life and experience yummy local cuisine, such as at the community Parwa Restaurant in Huchuy Qosco. You will have time to explore the exciting city of Cusco on your own. You may want to take a night tour or a cooking class or sample a local favorite, Pisco Sours, at one of the city’s many cafes.  All transfers, most meals, hotels, train, porters, camping, English-speaking guide, and sightseeing admissions are included. Airfare is not included. Single supplement is only $169.

Fun Facts About Machu Picchu…

It has been voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Machu Picchu’s construction is amazing considering the Inca’s did not use animals, iron tools, or the wheel. It’s a mystery how the massive blocks of stone were moved up steep terrain and through dense bush, but it is generally believed that hundreds of men were used to push the stones up.

The Incas were experts at using a building technique called ashlar in which blocks of stone are cut so precisely as to fit together tightly without mortar.

Machu Picchu was build at the height of the Inca Empire around 1450 but abandoned just over a century later in 1572 after the Spanish arrival in Peru.

Archaeologists believe Machu Picchu was constructed for use as a Royal Estate.
