Okay, so obviously Halloween is going to look a lot different this year. That said, there are still many fun things to do this Halloween. Here’s a list of what I know is open and happening for Halloween 2020. All of these activities are being offered with the best safety protocols possible for employees and guests. Check out their websites for specific visitor information.
FYI: Before I jump into Halloween fun, I would like to share some exciting news. My travel podcast is now available on the new Amazon Podcast Platform. Click here to check it out! They don’t have all the episodes and shows are from different seasons, so not sure about their algorithm. But at least my show is playing on Amazon and most other major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts and Stitcher.
Walt Disney World will not be hosting its annual “Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party” this year. However, they are offering “Fall Fun” at Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida.
What does this mean exactly?
There will be lots of cool decorations and Disney characters will pop up throughout the park wearing Halloween costumes. Special seasonal treats will be served and Disney Halloween merchandise will be sold, of course. Also, Disney photographers will be taking pix using special backdrops for all interested park customers. For the first time in many years, Disney is allowing visitors of ALL ages to wear costumes this year.
Furthermore, Disney World Resorts are offering discounted rates and specials through December 25. Click here for details!
FYI: California’s Disneyland was still not open at the time this blog was posted and neither was Knotts Berry Farm theme park (Buena Park, CA).
Another option is SeaWorld Spooktacular. Every weekend until November 1 will include a spooky fun trick-or-treat trail, Halloween characters, shows, and more. Admission to SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Diego includes SeaWorld Spooktacular.
LEGOLAND Florida has special fun every weekend in October with “Brick or Treat”, which includes special seasonal shows, Halloween LEGO characters, trick or treating, LEGO theme activities with prizes, and more. These special seasonal activities are included with your general admission ticket.
Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay will be operating at full steam for their 21st year. Every weekend until November 1 will be full of outdoor scare zones and outdoor Fiends show. The park’s roller coasters will also be operating for night thrill rides. This event is not meant for small children. Masks are required but costumes not allowed. Admission to this event is not included with the general admission ticket.
Universal Orlando is not hosting Halloween Horror Nights this year. But they are opening two scary haunted houses instead! They will be open every weekend through November 1 but are not recommended for children. With names like “Universal Monsters: The Bride of Frankenstein Lives” and “Revenge of the Tooth Fairy” it’s not wonder they are rated PG-13! Costume masks are only permitted on employees, not guests.
Haunted Happenings in Salem, MA typically draws more than 500,000 visitors to numerous special seasonal events. This year the city will hold a scaled-down event with nightly ghost walks and trolley tours, Halloween harbor cruises, tarot card readings, Haunted Witch Village (haunted house), Frankenstein’s Castle, and all of the museums, including the Witch Museum, Halloween Museum, Wax Museum, and Dungeon Museum, will be open, but not the usual Halloween Night Gala and other big crowd events.
More Fun Things to Do This Halloween
You will have to look up local ghost walks and haunted attractions. Many have closed this season but many are also open on a smaller scale and with restrictions. For example, Eastern State Penitentiary is not hosting its annual Terror Behind the Walls, but they are offering Small-Scale Night Tours that include special events. Masks are required on ghost walks, as well as social distancing, and group sizes will be restricted so be sure to reserve your tickets in advance. Many pedestrian events have switched to drive-thru this year, including Haunted Road (an extraordinary outdoor haunted theatrical event in Orlando), Boo at the Zoo at the Washington National Zoo, and Louisville Jack O’Lantern Spectacular (5,000+ carved and light pumpkins).
Other noteworthy events include Terror Town, Horror Hike Haunted Trail, Land of Illusion, Reapers Revenge, Brimstone Haunt, Dent School House, and Fear Factory (undecided at time of post).
