Change is always happening in the travel industry and right now there are some good and bad things happening. Here’s what you need to know:
1. Amtrak is bringing back its 1950s Glass-domed train for Fall Foliage Tours. These special trips will run from 9/27 – 11/2, taking leaf peepers (and train enthusasts) on a scenic ride from Albany, New York to Montreal, Canada. The Adirondack Mountains and Lake Champlain guarantee great fall foliage viewing. Seats on the Great Dome Car (the only one of its kind still in service) will be on a first-come, first serve basis. A ticket from Albany to Montreal starts at $53. Click here to learn more about the Adirondack Train!
2. Boo! Bad News! Airlines will soon begin charging more for economy seats in the front of the plane. So unless you have elite status, you will pay more to avoid the back of the plane. The airlines have not said what the additional fee will be. Also in airline news, Southwest Airlines is raising its early boarding fee to $15, $20, or $25, depending on the length of the flight and popularity of EarlyBird Check-in on the route. 3. British billionaire, Richard Branson, is launching a new cruise line, Virgin Voyages, in 2020. What is noteworthy about this new cruise line is that it is for adults only. No passengers are permitted under the age of 18. Also, the ships are expected to be trendy, energetic, and innovative to appeal to a younger generation of cruisers. News about the ships is being tightly guarded until launch, but one thing I did discover is that there will be no Broaway-style shows on these Caribbean cruises.
4. Speaking of cruises, Oprah (and Gayle King) will be hosting a three-day Girls Getaway Cruise aboard Holland America’s new ship, Nieuw Statendam. On January 30 – February 2, you can set sail on a grand Bahamas cruise that includes many Opray O-themed events and a day at Holland America’s private island, Half Moon Cay. Highlights include: O’s Reading Room, O, Beautiful, Love That, and A Conversation with Oprah. This cruise is sure to sell out so click here right now if you want to go!
5. And last, but certainly not least, is the announcement of the World’s First Beer Hotel! This 32-room (including 8 suites) hotel and brewery is opening in Columbus, Ohio. The Doghouse will feature a lobby bar, gym, on-site brewery, marketplace (for takeaway food), and spa with beer-infused products, such as craft beer soaps. Guest rooms will have fully stocked mini-fridges, rainfall showers, free Wi-Fi, smart TVs, and in-room taps!
