In the latest airline “bad news,” American, Delta, and United are introducing the lowest level of service to date–BASIC ECONOMY. They are claiming it is a good thing because they can offer cheaper tickets. I beg to differ. At some point, we must say “Enough is enough! I was under the impression that what we were getting previously WAS the most basic economy service the airlines could possibly offer. I’m afraid the next money-saving options will include being strapped to the wing (under the guise of SUPER BASIC ECONOMY SEATING) or parachuting out of the plane instead of landing. Airlines have already done more than consider reducing the number of bathrooms and seats on the plane. They have talked to aircraft engineers about designing planes with fewer bathrooms and a Stand Up Area (instead of seats). I think the only thing slowing down this “progress” is the FAA. They say it’s not safe to have passengers stand while in flight and during take off and landing. You think???
The most important things you need to know is that you will not have any say in your seat assignment. It will be assigned to you at check-in. Also, you will only be allowed one carry-on bag that must fit under your seat. You are NOT permitted access to the overhead bin. You will board last and no upgrades are available no matter what your elite status may be. Here’s the info I copied off American Airline’s website:
